Beyond Wrinkles: Can Mechanical Resilience Become a Biomarker of Skin Longevity?

A new study suggests that the way skin responds to gravity could provide a new functional measure of ageing

Wrinkles, pigmentation, hydration and elasticity have long dominated the way we assess skin ageing. But ageing also changes something more fundamental: the ability of skin to resist mechanical forces and maintain its structure over time.

A new study published in Scientific Reports explores this idea through a parameter called Skin Gravitational Stretchability (SGS), designed to measure how facial skin responds when a controlled force is applied in the direction of gravity.

The concept is simple but intriguing. Gravity acts continuously on our tissues throughout life. As the extracellular matrix changes, collagen architecture deteriorates and skin loses mechanical resilience, its response to this constant force may also change.

The researchers evaluated SGS in 280 females aged 9 to 78 years, comparing it with established measurements of skin biomechanics. They then followed 32 women during a 12-week facial skincare intervention, showing that SGS could detect changes associated with improvements in visible skin sagging.

The study went further by exploring the underlying biology. Ex vivo and cellular experiments linked these mechanical changes to pathways involving the extracellular matrix, collagen, oxidative stress and longevity-associated mechanisms.

This is perhaps the most interesting message of the work.

Skin ageing is not only about what we can see on the surface. It is also about the progressive loss of the tissue’s capacity to respond, adapt and preserve its mechanical integrity.

SGS will need broader independent validation before it can be considered an established biomarker. But the study opens an important discussion for the field of skin longevity: perhaps we should not only ask how old skin looks, but also how well it still functions.

At Skin Ageing & Challenges 2026, October 28–29 in Málaga, this transition from visible signs of ageing toward functional and biological markers of skin longevity will be part of the scientific discussion.
