
Mechanism by which Ring Collagen helps maintain facial shape
Shiseido researchers have identified a previously undescribed ring shaped collagen structure in facial skin, called Ring Collagen.
These interconnected collagen rings generate tension within the skin, helping it remain firm and closely adapted to facial contours. With age, the structure becomes disrupted as surrounding proteoglycans decrease, weakening skin tension and potentially contributing to sagging.
Using its AI powered Digital Skin Reality technology, Shiseido visualized these internal mechanical forces in three dimensions. The research also suggests that moderate multidirectional physical stimulation can increase proteoglycans and improve Ring Collagen organization in experimental skin models.
The findings highlight an important evolution in skin longevity research. Skin ageing may depend not only on the amount of collagen present, but also on its architecture, organization and mechanical activity.
Collagen architecture, tissue tension and the biological mechanisms responsible for maintaining facial structure will be among the topics discussed at Skin Ageing & Challenges 2026, taking place on October 28 and 29, 2026, in Málaga.
