Are ‘Zombie Cells’ in Your Skin Accelerating Brain Aging?
Mayo Clinic researchers have discovered that senescent cells—non-dividing “zombie” cells—accumulate in the skin as people age and may contribute to aging in other parts of the body, including the brain. Published in Aging Cell, their study shows that transplanting senescent skin cells into a preclinical model not only spreads senescence to other tissues but also accelerates physical decline, impairs muscle function, and worsens brain health.
João Passos, Ph.D., a lead author of the study, explains, “Senescent cells in the skin might be driving broader aging processes, beyond just wrinkles, and could help explain the connection between skin conditions and cognitive decline.”
The research suggests that protecting the skin from factors like sun exposure, smoking, and poor diet may be key to slowing systemic aging. The team is also exploring the potential of senolytic drugs to improve health by eliminating these zombie cells from the skin.
This breakthrough opens the door to new anti-aging strategies for both body and brain.
