Mitochondria–Melanosome Communication: A New Mechanism Regulating Skin Pigmentation
Shigeru Yanagi, Gakushuin University, Japan
We are pleased to announce Prof. Shigeru Yanagi from the Gakushuin University, Japan, will join the meeting and will present a talk about Mitochondria-Melanosome Communication: A New Mechanism Regulating Skin Pigmentation.
Mitochondria and melanosomes are essential organelles involved in cellular metabolism and pigmentation, respectively, but how they communicate within melanocytes has remained largely unclear. Our recent study identified a previously unrecognized physical and functional interaction between mitochondria and melanosomes mediated by STIM1 and MFN2. This organelle contact regulates melanosome function and contributes to the control of pigmentation. These findings reveal that mitochondrial activity can directly influence melanosome biology through inter-organelle communication, extending the concept of mitochondrial signaling beyond classical metabolic regulation. In this presentation, I will discuss the molecular mechanisms underlying mitochondria-melanosome contacts and their relevance to pigmentation and skin homeostasis. I will also briefly introduce our recent studies on Mitorubin, a mitochondria-activating compound, and discuss the potential of targeting mitochondrial function as a new approach to maintaining cellular and skin homeostasis.
