The Medal of Honor is the highest military award that can be awarded by the Government of the United States. Presented by the President of the United States in the name of the Congress, and is given only to members of the United States armed forces who are characterized by gallantry and seeming carelessness in the danger of life above and beyond the call of duty.

The military decoration prize is usually an award some sort of medal, which consists of the individual’s ribbon and medallion, as a distinctive design of Honor, which designates heroism or deserved or exceptional service or achievement.

Civil decorations awarded to military personnel should not be regarded as military awards, although some orders of chivalry have civilian and military units. Sometimes the decoration received by police and fire brigade officers can be viewed along with the military decorations on which they can be modeled, although they are not strictly military awards.
