Melanin and skin pigmentation: functional role and application opportunities

It is a great pleasure to welcome Dr.  Alessandra Napolitano from the University of Naples Federico in Italy. Dr. Napolitano will address the topic: ”Melanin and skin pigmentation: functional role and application opportunities”.

Eumelanins, the dark variant of skin pigments, are generally recognized as photoprotective agents

Eumelanins are also endowed with a remarkable antioxidant activity that has been ascribed to the 5,6-dihydroxyindole-2-carboxylic acid (DHICA) components.

DHICA melanin exhibits an intense UV absorption and is an effective scavenger of reactive oxygen species

Thanks to favourable solubility properties, the variant of DHICA melanin that is presented has a potential as anti-inflammatory and photoprotective ingredient in dermocosmetic formulations.
