Literature has established that atmospheric pollution aggravates atopy and skin aging. Ultrafine particles (UFPless than 100nm) contain toxic poly-aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). In addition to their interaction with skin surface, UFP can translocate from lung capillaries into blood circulation, reaching thus living dermis and epidermis. Some PAH being phototoxic when exposed to long UVA (340-400 nm), a slight but significant chronic photo-oxidative stress may occur in polluted cities inhabitants’ skin. Dr Marrot’s research aims at characterizing the mechanisms behind this “photo-pollution stress” in various in vitro skin models.
